IPIECA, the oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues, has released a new fact sheet in an effort to promote carbon capture and storage (CCS).
IPIECA says that CCS will be critical for meeting the aims of the Paris Agreement, calling it an essential component of the energy transition and the transformation of the global energy system during the 21st century.
Widespread deployment of CCS could enable low-carbon fuels and electricity to be used in transport and homes and in key parts of the energy-intensive industrial sector, including the reduction of process emissions. Combined with bioenergy (using biomass for energy), CCS has the potential for negative emissions; this could be instrumental in achieving net zero emissions during the second half of this century. Rapid and large-scale adoption of CCS is required to meet the aims of the Paris Agreement, IPIECA says.
This new fact sheet explores the scale-up and deployment of CCS in more detail and presents a series of facts about the necessary development of this technology.
