University of Texas (UT) Austin Hildebrand Department is partnering with Switch Energy Alliance (SEA) to present a case competition open to university students throughout the world. This to increase energy awareness and to promote innovative energy solutions for energy poverty around the world.

Overview of the Competition

The International Switch Energy Case Competition is open to all university students throughout the world. Teams of 3-4 students will virtually compete for $10,000 in prize money as they identify multidisciplinary solutions to an energy poverty question. SEA is accepting registrations through 2 October.

Over a three-week period from 12 October to 2 November, the teams will research the problem and create a PowerPoint and 10-minute video presentation reflecting their proposed solution. Energy professionals will be available to guide the teams. The top five teams will virtually compete in the finals on 14 November.

More details can be found on the SEA website and students can register on the website.

The Case Competition Problem (aka the Prompt)

  • How does the world transition to a sustainable, equitable energy future, while helping to bring the benefits of modern life to the hundreds of millions who live without reliable, affordable energy? During the competition, students will think through one of their generation's most important issues and offer their own, real-world solutions.

  • The prompt will challenge the teams to propose an energy transition for one of the countries specified in the prompt, taking into consideration all relevant factors including economic feasibility, societal issues, equity, available resources, scalability, innovative technology, cultural sensitivity, environmental impact, corruption, and health implications. Multidisciplinary solutions are needed, not prior technical experience.

  • The competition's problem will be real-world, not hypothetical. SEA will share the finalists' presentations with thought leaders in the respective countries.

Reasons for Students to Participate:

  • Hone leadership skills and engage with a global energy non-profit

  • Network with energy professionals

  • Compete for cash prizes while developing research and communication skills

  • Gain experience virtually working with a remote team that simulates future workplace settings

  • Obtain a deep understanding of a critical global energy issue

  • Receive broad recognition by competing in an international competition

The world is realizing that energy is one of the most important issues of our time. The International Switch Energy Case Competition provides an opportunity for students of all majors and levels to think deeply about the global challenges and importance of energy.
SEA is also seeking energy professionals to act as virtual mentors (30 minutes per week for 3 weeks). Visit the SEA website for details.
