Lloyd's Register Foundation, a charitable foundation helping to protect life and property by supporting engineering-related education, public engagement, and the application of research, will provide funding for the program.

The Lloyd's Register Safety Accelerator will work with Lloyd’s Register clients and key industry players to identify areas of operation with the most significant challenges to safety and risk. Technology businesses seeking an application for existing digital solutions will be invited to apply for funding to trial these products in an industrial environment, through the accelerator collaborators. By providing the opportunity for industry partners to be early adopters of innovation without the associated financial risk and also offering technology companies both funding and a route to market, the Lloyd's Register Safety Accelerator will address issues acting as a barrier to improved industrial operation.

Lloyd’s Register Chief Technology Officer Nial McCollam said, “The Lloyd’s Register Safety Accelerator program is designed to open up the safety and risk marketplace to support and encourage more digital companies into the sector.”

Professor Richard Clegg, chief executive of the Lloyd's Register Foundation, added, “We believe there is a huge opportunity to accelerate the application of science to solve real-world safety problems—one of the principal objectives of our foundation."

Human safety on-board will be one of the first safety challenge themes; applications addressing this challenge area will open in Summer 2018.
