The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) has updated its set of Life-Saving Rules to simplify and improve them. The organization’s Report 459 now lists nine rules designed to protect workers in the oil and gas industry from fatalities.
This is the second time IOGP has updated the report since its launch in 2012, when it contained 18 rules. The organization says the paired-down list still covers a similar scope as it did originally.
The IOGP claims that 376 lives could have been saved since 2008 by following the guidelines in its report. The report contains guidance for implementation of the rules and an analysis of background data used to formulate the revision. Each rule is accompanied by a simple icon that succinctly encapsulates it.
The IOGP says its goal for the revision is to improve the level of adoption across the global oil and gas industry. The rules, however, are not intended to address all risks and hazards in the industry, the organization says. Instead, they are meant to draw attention to the activities most likely to lead to a fatality and the life-saving actions over which an individual has control. They are intended to support existing company management systems, not replace them. In fact, the organizations says, the rules rely on these systems already being in place.
