More than 6,000 oil and gas professionals converged onto Calgary’s BMO Centre for the 2019 Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE). For the first time in its 95-year history, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) annual meeting of members and flagship event was held in Canada, providing an opportunity for the Canadian hydrocarbon industry to display its wealth of resources and technology. E&P professionals from around the world attended ATCE for a comprehensive review of technical topics related to industry productivity, efficiency, and safety, and sustainability.

The ATCE technical program began with an Opening General Session titled “Positively Impacting the World Through Responsible Energy Development.” The session included a panel moderated by Eithne Treanor of ETreanor Media, and included four distinguished panelists: Jackie Forrest of ARC Energy Research Institute, Leigh-Ann Russell of BP, Jeanne-Mey Sun of Baker Hughes, a GE company, and Aleksey Vashkevich of Gazprom Neft. The panelists discussed new ideas, industry advancements, and the urgency behind spreading environmentally sustainable solutions across the industry.

“The opening general session was fantastic, with knowledgeable panelists speaking on sustainability and the future of oil and gas,” said 2019 SPE President Sami Alnuaim. “There are so many amazing developments happening across our industry that deserve recognition, and I am glad we were able to talk about those advancements at ATCE. Global energy demand continues to rise, yet nearly a billion people on our planet still live in energy poverty. The panel did an outstanding job of addressing ways to improve people’s lives through hydrocarbon development, while also maintaining our earth as we know it today.”

The 2019 ATCE technical program also placed a particular emphasis on Canadian heavy oil production and other topics specific to the region.

“The Canadian oil and gas industry is strong, and we were proud to bring SPE’s biggest event to Calgary to highlight Canada’s most exciting companies and natural resources,” said 2020 SPE President, Shauna Noonan. “Every year, ATCE is the best place to showcase the latest technologies in oil and gas and collaborate with industry peers. We want to thank all the conference’s speakers, exhibitors, organizers, and most of all our members for making Canada’s first ATCE a memorable experience.”

ATCE continued its tradition of celebrating the accomplishments of E&P professionals within industry. Sixty-two individuals were honored at the Annual Reception and Banquet for their significant contributions to the oil and gas industry and the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Along with the extensive technical program of 350+ papers and presentations, ATCE also included one of the largest displays of E&P products and technologies with over 276 exhibiting companies from 47 different countries.

The 2020 conference will take place on 5-7 October 2020 in Denver, Colorado, USA. For more information, visit www.atce.org.
