Oilfield-Corrosion-Failure Analysis: Lessons Learned From Pitting Morphologies

Identifying the type of corrosion is the first step in the analysis and prevention of corrosion-related failures. Visual inspection of the pit morphology can provide insights into the type of corrosion that is occurring.

Identifying the type of corrosion is the first step in the analysis and prevention of corrosion-related failures. Visual inspection of the pit morphology can provide insights into the type of corrosion that is occurring. The complete paper describes in detail how to identify the corrosion mechanism on the basis of the pit morphologies.

Corrosion Diagnostics

The shape of the corrosion pit sides and bottoms often provides important clues in diagnostics. The sample must be clean. Dipping the sample in concentrated hydrochloric (HCl) acid is one possibility. The immersion should not be too long because some original features could be modified.
