Aerial surveillance of oil and gas operations can help in decision-making and lead to quick and appropriate responses to deal with potentially detrimental matters.

At a pipeline system in Indonesia, technology-based security systems were recommended to improve the security of the operator’s working area and to develop a security system with the support of drone technology to collect pictures and videos of oil and gas activities. Photos and videos obtained by the drone were compiled to provide an overview of monitoring activities, analysis, and conditions in the work area.

Aerial surveillance by drones in the pipeline-operation and -maintenance areas shows the growth of residential areas along the pipeline right of way and the increase in population and industrial activities in the vicinity, both of which increase risk. Using drone technology to monitor the pipeline operation and maintenance area can facilitate quick and appropriate responses to prevent greater risk and implement procedures to minimize the effect on the environment.

This paper outlines the use of drones to monitor the gas-pipeline network. It concludes by recommending the use of drones to provide a snapshot of operational safety and mitigate risk to the community.
