The eighth International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) will return to Kuala Lumpur for the second time in December. Themed “Innovation and Collaboration: Keys to Affordable Energy,” the event will be held on 10–12 December 2014 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The annual conference, which rotates between Asia Pacific and Middle East sites, is organized to advance scientific and technological knowledge related to the exploration, development, production, transportation, and processing of oil and natural gas. The conference’s program focuses on the upstream oil and gas value chain, from subsurface technologies used in exploration and production to the transportation of hydrocarbons.

Conference sponsoring organizations include the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and SPE. Malaysia’s national oil company, Petronas, is hosting the event along with co-hosts Shell and Schlumberger.

In addition to the executive plenary, a Technology Leaders Plenary Session titled, “Leveraging Technology: Current Challenges and Opportunities for the Future” and an industry plenary session will take place on 11 and 12 December 2014, respectively. Four panel sessions will focus on current industry issues and the conference theme.

In line with the innovation and collaboration theme of the conference, the 11 December topical luncheon will feature Royal Dutch Shell’s Executive Vice President of Upstream International Harry Brekelmans. In his presentation, Brekelmans will discuss how to meet the needs of an exploding global population in a sustainable way through collaboration in technology, and innovative collaboration in the establishment of policies, regulations, and relationships.

Topics of the various panel sessions include:

  • Are We Delivering Fit for Purpose Oil & Gas Field Developments?
  • How to Deliver HSSE and Operational Excellence
  • What’s So Unconventional about Unconventional Oil and Gas?
  • Collaboration, Outsourcing, or Building Internal Capabilities? Lessons Learned!

The annual IPTC Excellence In Project Integration Award recognizes a project that adds value to the industry and exemplifies strong teamwork, solid geoscience knowledge, reservoir and production engineering acumen, determined and watchful construction, and outstanding facilities engineering practices. In addition, the projects require a pervasive culture of HSE, and a positive impact on the country, the region, and the world. This year, 13 nominations from 10 organizations representing eight countries were received to be considered for the 8th IPTC Excellence in Project Integration Award. The finalists will be determined in October, with the winner honored at the Award Presentation and Conference Dinner on 10 December.

On 9 December, a young professionals workshop will be held under the theme “Technology and Management: Creating Affordable Energy for our Future.” The event will bring together the next generation of leaders, those 35 years of age and under or those with less than 10 years of industry experience, to discuss their perspectives on a way forward to energize the industry. Included will be a keynote address, panel session by industry executives, a team-building activity, and group breakout sessions.

From the 1,750 technical papers submitted to be presented at the conference, 530 were selected for 63 technical sessions by the conference program committee, reflecting the balance between engineering and geoscience disciplines, and to emphasize the importance of collaboration between geoscientists and petroleum engineers.
