The Kimu 2 appraisal well, located in the forelands region of Papua New Guinea, encountered gas in the target Alene reservoir. A drillstem test undertaken over the Alene sandstone interval flowed at a continuous rate of 34.5 MMcf/D over a 72-hour period, through a 1-in. choke, according to operator Oil Search. The company said provisional interpretation at this location is that it has similar reservoir properties to the Kimu 1 well and “a slightly greater” reservoir thickness. Oil Search also said the reservoir appears to be in pressure communication with Kimu 1. Spudded on 22 April, Kimu 2 reached a total depth of 6,374 ft on 20 May. Evaluation of the well data acquired has begun and will be used to help assess options for the commercialization of the Kimu field.
