For the first time in its 95-year history, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) annual meeting of members and flagship event, SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, was held in Calgary, Canada, and drew more than 6,000 oil and gas professionals. E&P professionals from around the world attended ATCE for a comprehensive review of technical topics related to oil and gas industry productivity, efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

The ATCE technical program began with an Opening General Session titled “Positively Impacting the World Through Responsible Energy Development.”

The session included a panel moderated by Eithne Treanor of ETreanor Media, and included four distinguished panelists:

  • Jackie Forrest of ARC Energy Research Institute
  • Leigh-Ann Russell of BP
  • Jeanne-Mey Sun of Baker Hughes, a GE company,
  • Andrey Bochkov of Gazprom Neft

Before the panel session started, 2019 SPE President Sami Alnuaim introduced a video by SPE young professionals (YPs) and said, “I’m very excited to hear how our distinguished panelists address this topic, but first, I would like to share something that makes me hopeful for the future of our industry.”
In the video message, SPE YPs shared their thoughts on the importance of sustainability for the industry and their commitment to addressing the challenge.

The panelists discussed new ideas, industry advancements, and the urgency behind spreading environmentally sustainable solutions across the industry.

“The opening general session was fantastic, with knowledgeable panelists speaking on sustainability and the future of oil and gas,” said Alnuaim. “There are so many amazing developments happening across our industry that deserve recognition, and I am glad we were able to talk about those advancements at ATCE. Global energy demand continues to rise, yet nearly a billion people on our planet still live in energy poverty. The panel did an outstanding job of addressing ways to improve people’s lives through hydrocarbon development, while also maintaining our earth as we know it today.”
