The new collaborative series between TWA and SPE Student Chapters, “TWA Student Chapter Spotlight,” aims to feature award-winning SPE student chapters from around the world throughout the year. Each article in the series will spotlight a student chapter and share its successes, challenges, and innovative practices.

The first student chapter to be formed in Indonesia, the Bandung Institute of Technology SPE Student Chapter (commonly abbreviated as SPE ITB SC) has become a leading student chapter with 2,139 members as of December 2018 and more than 100 work programs run each year. A dominant presence among other student chapters in the region, SPE ITB SC has won the outstanding student chapter award in consecutive years from 2014 to 2019, with the exception of 2017.

SPE ITB SC consists of members from multidisciplinary majors encompassing the oil and gas industry—petroleum engineering, geological engineering, geophysics engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, oceanic engineering, civil engineering, and others.

To bridge students with professional experts in the oil and gas industry, SPE ITB SC holds several big events each year.

Integrated Petroleum Festival (IPFEST) 2019

Integrated Petroleum Festival is the the biggest international competition-based petroleum event held by SPE ITB SC, Indian Petroleum Engineers Association (IATMI), and Association of Petroleum Engineering Students in Pertamina University. More than 1,000 participants took part in IPFEST 2019.

The event focused on the sustainability of the energy industry and included a series of events such as guest lectures; social- and energy-related events; and the Integrated Petroleum Convention and Exhibition, which invited professional experts to give deep talks to students who are interested in tackling the problems of  the oil and gas industry.

IPFEST 2019 consisted of seven competitions: Business Case Study, Paper and Poster Presentation, Smart Competition, Plan of Development, Oil Rig Design, PetroDebate, and Mud Innovation Competition.

exSPEdition: A Series of Oil and Gas Field Trips

To nurture students’ curiosity to get closer to the practical industry, SPE ITB SC holds field trips through the exSPEdition program. In 2019, students went on seven field trips and company visits to Halliburton, ExxonMobil Cepu, PDSI, Schlumberger, ENI, Medco E&P, and Weatherford in Indonesia.

Get-To-Know Petroleum Guest Lecture

SPE ITB SC recognizes the interest from students, especially freshmen, toward learning more about the oil and gas industry. Therefore, in addition to conducting routine guest lectures and seminars on technical topics, the chapter also holds guest lectures with introductory discussion on oil and gas through the Get-To-Know Petroleum (GTP) event. The main idea of running GTP is to bridge students to the industry, and help them understand the oil and gas industry in Indonesia and the global status quo. The GTP event held on 30 August attracted 200 participants with high enthusiasm toward the industry and become one of our highlight events.

SPE Superbowl 2018

To make sure that every student who has the courage to compete in external and international competitions such as the SPE International and Asia Pacific PetroBowl gets a chance to practice, SPE IBT SC held the internal SPE Superbowl competition to give them real-life competition experience.

Eighty four undergraduate students participated in the event and improved the quality of their knowledge to the next level. In addition to the fast-paced quiz, competitions on oil rig design, case study, and technical papers were held.
