What does a reaction engineer do when his (or her) lab gets shut down by a virus pandemic? Re-purpose your equipment to make direly needed hand sanitizer for the local medical center (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center). Together with my RAPID graduate students Nasser Al Azri and Riddhesh Patel, we received permission to keep our 20 L batch reactors running to mix up hand sanitizer (by WHO specifications) from donated chemicals. Doing our little bit to keep our overworked healthcare workers safe.
