A total of 114 individuals participated, representing 18 organizations and seven countries from both E&P and service companies. The workshop provided a platform for the development and growth of young professionals from various disciplines. There were also abundant opportunities for networking with peers and senior industry figures.

Keynote speakers covered the future demands of the industry and highlighted industry demographics. The majority of current professionals are now between 35 and 50, and the demand for young professionals to fill future industry needs is strong.

Some of the sessions covered:

  • The importance of soft skills, including teamwork and how to present clearly and concisely
  • The importance of differentiating oneself, understanding the difference between technical quality and decision quality, and developing one’s “organizational capability”
  • The art of networking, effective communication, decision making, leadership, and how expectations are often culture-specific
  • Managing expectations, including performance and rewards. Motivation in the workplace was also discussed
  • The critical importance of technical coaching and mentoring for the development of young professionals
  • How effective negotiations can be used in developing one’s career and reducing conflict

Breakout sessions allowed participants further opportunities to engage and develop particular solutions to problems common in the industry today. One session involved participants in activities requiring team-building and networking.
Participants all agreed that the workshop was a tremendous success; improving their understanding of soft skills and their ability align their talents with the needs of the industry.
